Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and HIV screening

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites that can be passed from one person to another during sex or intimate contact.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that damages the cells in your immune system and weakens your ability to fight everyday infections and disease. The most common way of getting HIV in the UK is through having anal or vaginal sex without a condom.

Useful information about STI and HIV is provided by the The Florey Clinic, the local sexual health service based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. This includes how to get STI and HIV testing.

Most sexual health services are funded by your local council.

An easy read guide to HIV has been put together by the National AIDS Trust in partnership with Mencap.

NHS Lanarkshire has a range of easy read information on STIs and HIV.
